Subscriptions will be opened on Saturday, March 15th, 2024 and close on Sunday, September 22nd, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. Paris time. Judging will take place from October 11th to October 13th, 2024.

Sections

The competition is in digital images and includes 5 sections :

“Open monochrome”
monochrome only

All techniques are allowed. Creativity is allowed in this category. The images must be monochrome, and correspond to the PSA and FIAP : See definition of “Open” Monochrome photography (section 13.1) in the Salon Rules

“Backlighting”
monochrome only

For the submitted images, the light source must be behind the person, object or whatever is the subject of the photograph. In other words, the light (whether natural or artificial) is opposite the photographer and the subject is lit up from behind. Play around with light, shadow, contrast.

This section is a Monochrome section and COLOR IMAGES are NOT allowed in that section.

“Open color”
color only – monochrome not allowed

All techniques are allowed. Creativity is allowed in this category.

An important remark is that MONOCHROME IMAGES are NOT allowed in that section.
“Rainy days”
color only – monochrome not allowed

Bring out your raincoats and umbrellas! We will be looking for images of falling rain, from a few drops to a real downpour, as well as the traces left by rain on streets, cars, plants, etc. Subjects may include drenched passers-by, children playing in a puddle, raindrops on windows revealing a barely visible landscape or streetscape beyond. The possibilities are endless, and may involve everything from the use of wide angle lenses to macrophotography.

Sign Language
color only – monochrome not allowed

On the ground, walls, or on signboards; in streets, stations, subways, shopping centers, museums, hospitals … signs are all around us. They show us the way, tempt us, forbid us…. Make use of the graphic nature of signage with its repetitions, its contradictions, or its connection to the surrounding environment. Obviously signs must be a key element in your composition.

9. Exhibition requirements

Image and entry requirements This exhibition is open to anyone; however, an entry may be rejected when the Sponsor or the Exhibition Organizers, in their reasonable discretion, believes the entry does not conform to exhibition rules and these ES-COE. Membership in any photographic organization is not required.

Entries will not be accepted from any entrant who is on the PSA Penalties List for Ethics Violation. Entry fees are not refundable in these circumstances.

Image creation and ownership: In all sections of the exhibition, images must originate as photographs made by the entrant. They may not incorporate identifiable images produced by anyone else (for example: clip art, replacement skies, or stock images). Images created in whole or in part by image creation software (frequently called ‘AI’ images) are not allowed. Editing or alteration of images is permitted within the limits specified in the relevant section definitions that are available here https://psa-photo.org/page/division-definitions

Any person submitting or attempting to submit a totally AI generated image that does not begin with a light capture from the maker, from any Photographic Society of America exhibition, social media, event, or publication, other than for editorial purposes, shall be prohibited from PSA for a period of from 3 years to life.

FIAP Honours : In conformity with the documents published by FIAP concerning their Distinctions, the acceptances in salons under FIAP Patronage will be taken into account for AFIAP, AV-AFIAP, EFIAP, EFIAP levels, AV-EFIAP, AV- EFIAP Levels, CAFIAP and CEFIAP distinctions.

PSA Star Ratings : To receive proper Star ratings credit from PSA, entrants must provide their names and country exactly the same way in each exhibition. Aliases are not permitted. Please contact PSA in the event of name changes or relocating to another country. Using one’s name differently in different exhibition exposes the entrant to the risk that many of their acceptances may not be recognized by PSA Star Ratings.

Reproduction : The entrant permits the sponsors to reproduce all or part of the entered material free of charge for publication and/or display in media related to the exhibition. This may include low resolution posting on a website. The Photographic Society of America (PSA) may request specific permission from entrants to reproduce entered images in its educational materials. The terms of that permission will be mutually agreed between the entrant and PSA except in the circumstances where the entered image is found to breach the PSA Ethics Policy. In those circumstances the image may be reproduced by PSA, without the entrant’s further permission, for educational purposes to illustrate serious exhibition rule violations. For those reproductions, the entrant’s name will be withheld.

Entries will not be accepted from entrants who indicate that their images may not be reproduced in materials related to the exhibition. The exhibition assumes no liability of any misuse of copyright

Re-use of accepted images : Any image that has been accepted in this exhibition, past or present, may not be entered again in the same Division Star Ratings Class in any future instances of this exhibition. It may, of course, be entered in any other PSA recognised exhibitions but must always have the same title. Re-titling in another language is not allowed.

Entry : An Entry consists of, up to and including, four (4) images entered by a single entrant into the same Section. An entrant may only enter a specific Section once. Entrants may not enter identical or similar images into the same section or different sections of the same exhibition. Similar is defined as almost identical in subject, composition, props, lighting, or technique so that a reasonable person viewing the entries together would decide the entrant has duplicated the previous image except for minor changes.

Titles : Each image must have a unique title that relates to the content of the image. That unique title must be used for entry of that image or of an identical Image into any and all PSA-Recognized exhibitions. Titles must be 35 characters or fewer. No titles may be visible to the judges, and nothing in the image may identify the entrant. Titles may not include file extensions such as .jpg or .jpeg (or any other camera capture filenames such as IMG 471). Titles may not consist of personal identifiers possibly augmented by a number; or include words such as “untitled” or “no title”. Titles may not consist solely of numbers unless those numbers are prominently contained within the image, such as a contestant number in a race.

Color and Monochrome : Color and Monochrome images from the same capture that share substantial pictorial content in common will be considered the same image and must be given the same title.

10. Sending images

The registration and the transfer of images have to be made on the website: www.salondaguerre.paris

Portrait orientation images should be no larger than 1080 pixels in “vertical” dimension.

The image file size must not exceed 2Mo.

Non compliant images will be rejected during the uploading procedure.

Copyright: Photos submitted must be free of any constraint and must not in any way prejudice the rights of any natural or legal person whatsoever. All parts of the image must be photographed by the author who holds the copyright of all the works presented.

No title or participant identification should be visible on the image.

The Exhibition will be conducted in accordance with the rules of the PSA and of FIAP : An entrant’s images will not be presented to the judges consecutively. An entrant’s four images will be distributed throughout four rounds of judging in that section. Distribution of images will be in the same round order as submitted by the entrant. At no stage will a judge be able to view all the entrant’s images together.

11. Judging method

13. Definitions of sections

All submissions must conform to the following definitions to be accepted and validated by all International Organizations granting recognition or patronage.

Statement on Subject Matter applicable to all sections :

The fundamental rule that must be observed at all times and applies to all sections offered in exhibitions with PSA recognition is that the welfare of living creatures is more important than any photograph. This means that practices such as baiting of subjects with a living creature and removal of birds from nests, for the purpose of obtaining a photograph, are highly unethical, and such photographs are not allowed in any exhibition with PSA recognition. Under no circumstances may a living creature be placed in a situation where it will be killed, injured or stressed for the purpose of obtaining a photograph. Images that show live creatures being fed to captive animals, birds or reptiles are not permitted under any circumstances.

There are also concerns about the use of aerial photography, drones, helicopters, low flying aircraft. These should not cause any interference with other individuals or animals which causes a disturbance in their normal activity or disrupt the way any individuals or animals interact with their environment. Entrants in PSA recognized exhibitions should comply with all relevant laws and regulations, associated with aerial photography, in the country in which the image was taken.

Entry into PSA recognized exhibitions is conditional on accepting these policies. The content of images must comply with the General Conditions and with the Division and Section definitions listed in these conditions. Images that – in the sole opinion of the judges- do not comply, will be disqualified so the entrant may be aware of the problem when considering entry into other exhibitions with PSA recognition.

13.1 Section “Open Monochrome” PID-MONOCHROME

All techniques are allowed. Creativity is allowed in this category. The images must be monochrome, and correspond to the PSA and FIAP definitions below :

Definition of monochrome image (PSA)

An image is considered to be Monochrome only if it gives the impression of having no color (i.e. contains only shades of grey which can include pure black and pure white) OR it gives the impression of being a greyscale image that has been toned in one color across the entire image. (For example by Sepia, red, gold, etc.) A greyscale or multi-colored image modified or giving the impression of having been modified by partial toning, multi-toning or by the inclusion of spot coloring does not meet the definition of monochrome and shall be classified as a Color Work.

Definition of monochrome image (FIAP)

A black and white work fitting from the very dark grey (black) to the very clear grey (white) is a monochrome work with the various shades of grey.

A black and white work toned entirely in a single color will remain a monochrome work able to stand in the black and white category; such a work can be reproduced in black and white in the catalogue of a salon under the FIAP Patronage.

On the other hand, a black and white work modified by a partial toning or by the addition of one color becomes a color work (polychrome) to stand in the color category; such a work requires color reproduction in the catalogue of a salon under FIAP patronage.

13.2 Section “Backlighting” PID-MONOCHROME

This section is a Monochrome section. Thus, submitted images must respect the definitions of the paragraphs “DEFINITION OF MONOCHROME IMAGE (PSA)” and “DEFINITION OF MONOCHROME IMAGE (FIAP) here above.

Additionally, for the submitted images, the light source must be behind the person, object or whatever is the subject of the photograph. In other words, the light (whether natural or artificial) is opposite the photographer and the subject is lit up from behind. Play around with light, shadow, contrast.

13.3 Section “Open Color” PID-COLOR

All techniques are allowed. Creativity is allowed in this category.

An important remark is that MONOCHROME IMAGES are not allowed in that section.

13.4 Section “Rainy days” PID-COLOR

Bring out your raincoats and umbrellas! We will be looking for images of falling rain, from a few drops to a real downpour, as well as the traces left by rain on streets, cars, plants, etc. Subjects may include drenched passers-by, children playing in a puddle, raindrops on windows revealing a barely visible landscape or streetscape beyond. The possibilities are endless, and may involve everything from the use of wide angle lenses to macrophotography.

An important remark is that MONOCHROME IMAGES are not allowed in that section.

13.4 Section “Sign Language” PID-COLOR

On the ground, walls, or on signboards; in streets, stations, subways, shopping centers, museums, hospitals … signs are all around us. They show us the way, tempt us, forbid us…. Make use of the graphic nature of signage with its repetitions, its contradictions, or its connection to the surrounding environment. Obviously signs must be a key element in your composition.

An important remark is that MONOCHROME IMAGES are not allowed in that section.

14. Conditions related to PSA and FIAP patronage

The Exhibition will be conducted in accordance with the rules of the PSA and FIAP.
The aforementioned conditions and the following conditions (PSA and FIAP) are to be respected to claim to participate in the 17th “Salon Daguerre”.

Breaches of Rules

FIAP : Each entrant to FIAP salons must observe the rules of FIAP and conform to the regulations of the current FIAP Patronage Regulations document and document 038/2023.

Any entrant, whose image shows anything suspicious in regard to compliance with FIAP regulations or definitions, can be asked by the organiser or by FIAP, to submit the original capture file (file containing the data recorded by the sensor; ie: the RAW or the original unretouched JPEG files) plus the file of the images immediately before and immediately following the questionable image. If the entrant fails to provide what is required, he/she can be sanctioned.

The names of sanctioned entrants will be put on a list, known as the FIAP Red List, which will be available to the organisers of FIAP salons via the salon’s profile page on the myfiap.net platform. A sanctioned person’s participation in any event of FIAP will be restricted or banned depending on the case. In addition, they cannot be appointed as a judge in a salon under FIAP patronage, organise a salon with FIAP patronage, nor apply for FIAP distinctions and they lose the right to use any FIAP distinctions they have formerly received.

IMPORTANT: Concerning entries that originated as digital photographs, authors must preserve intact with no alteration, the original metadata of images. In case of dispute relating to compliance with FIAP regulations, the fact of FIAP not being able to access this important data could result in the author being sanctioned.

Any person who is found guilty of using photographic material that was not captured in camera by that person will be excluded for life from FIAP activities.

Salon chairmen, persons closely involved in the organisation of the salon and persons in charge of the handling of the salon software are not allowed to participate in the salon.

Sanctions : Each entrant to FIAP salons acknowledges that they will incur sanctions if they breach the FIAP regulations. (see FIAP document 038/2023).

PSA : Non-compliance

Artificial Intelligence (AI) : Any person submitting or attempting to submit a totally AI generated image that does not begin with a light capture from the maker, from any Photographic Society of America exhibition, social media, event, or publication, other than for editorial purposes, shall be prohibited from PSA for a period of from 3 years to life.

For composite images all files are required.

This Exhibition is open to anyone; however, an entry may be rejected when the Sponsor or the Exhibition Organizers, in their reasonable discretion, believes the entry does not conform to exhibition rules and these Conditions of Entry. Membership in any photographic organization is not required.
Sanctions: Entries will not be accepted from any entrant who is currently sanctioned by PSA.

PSA Star Ratings: To receive proper Star ratings credit from PSA, entrants must provide their names and country exactly the same in each exhibition. Aliases are not permitted. Please contact PSA in the event of name changes or relocating to another country. Using one’s name differently in different exhibition exposes the entrant to the risk that many of their acceptances may not be recognized by PSA Star Ratings

Image Creation: Entries must originate as photographs (image-captures of objects via light sensitivity) made by the entrant on photographic emulsion or acquired digitally.

Certification: By virtue of submitting an image, the entrant certifies the work as his or her own (.Images may not incorporate elements produced by anyone else (for example: clip art, images or art by others downloaded from the Internet). Aliases are not allowed. The entrant permits the sponsors to reproduce all or part of the entered material free of charge for publication and/or display in media related to the exhibition. This may include low resolution posting on a website.

Note: Entrants who indicate that their images may not be reproduced or used “will not be eligible for awards” or inclusion in audio-visuals of the exhibition “and could be subject to disqualification” by the exhibition sponsors. The exhibition assumes no liability of any misuse of copyright.

Alteration and Computer Generation: Subject to Divisional restrictions (particularly Nature, Photo Travel, and Photojournalism) images may be altered, either electronically or otherwise, by the maker. Adjustments to enhance images or creatively modify images are allowed providing the underlying photograph is retained in a way that is obvious to the viewer. Images may not be constructed entirely with a computer, and must be the sole work of the author.

Re-use of accepted images: Once an image has been accepted in this exhibition it may not be entered again in any future instances of this exhibition. It may, of course, be entered in any other PSA/FIAP recognised exhibitions but must always have the same title.

Entry: An Entry consists of, up to and including, four (4) images entered by a single entrant into the same Section. An entrant may only enter a specific Section once.

That unique title must be used for entry of that image or of an identical Image into any and all PSA-Recognized exhibitions. Titles must be 35 characters or fewer. No titles may be visible to the judges, and nothing in the image may identify the maker.

Color and Monochrome: Color and Monochrome images from the same capture that share substantial pictorial content in common will be considered the same image and must be given the same title.

You acknowledge and accept that entering this exhibition means that the status and results of your entry may be made public.

Definitions of sections

All submissions must conform to the following definitions to be accepted and validated by all International Organizations granting recognition or patronage.

SUBJECT MATTER AND SECTION DEFINITIONS

Statement on Subject Matter applicable to all sections

The fundamental rule that must be observed at all times and applies to all sections offered in exhibitions with FIAP patronage or PSA recognition is that the welfare of living creatures is more important than any photograph. This means that practices such as baiting of subjects with a living creature and removal of birds from nests, for the purpose of obtaining a photograph, are highly unethical, and such photographs are not allowed in any exhibition with FIAP patronage or PSA recognition. Under no circumstances may a living creature be placed in a situation where it will be killed, injured or stressed for the purpose of obtaining a photograph. This rule applies regardless of whether or not the creature being killed, injured or stressed is visible in the captured image.

There are also concerns about the use of aerial photography, drones, helicopters, low flying aircraft. These should not cause any interference with other individuals or animals which causes a disturbance in their normal activity or disrupt the way any individuals or animals interact with their environment.

Entry in this exhibition is conditional on accepting these policies. The content of images must comply with these General Conditions and with the Division and Section definitions listed in these conditions. Images that – in the sole opinion of the judges or the Exhibition Organizers – do not comply, will be disqualified so the entrant may be aware of the problem when considering entry into other exhibitions with FIAP patronage/PSA recognition.

Further details on the PSA’s drone policy may be found at https://psa-photo.org/index.php?psa-policies#drone

Section “Open Monochrome” PID-MONO:

All techniques are allowed. Creativity is allowed in this category. The images must be monochrome, and correspond to the PSA and FIAP definitions below:

1 DEFINITION OF MONOCHROME IMAGE (PSA):

An image is considered to be Monochrome only if it gives the impression of having no color (i.e. contains only shades of gray which can include pure black and pure white) OR it gives the impression of being a greyscale image that has been toned in one color across the entire image. (For example, by Sepia, red, gold, etc.)

A greyscale or multi-colored image modified or giving the impression of having been modified by partial toning, multi-toning or by the inclusion of spot coloring does not meet the definition of monochrome and shall be classified as a Color Work.

2 DEFINITION OF MONOCHROME IMAGE (FIAP):

A black and white work fitting from the very dark grey (black) to the very clear grey (white) is a monochrome work with the various shades of grey.

A black and white work toned entirely in a single color will remain a monochrome work able to stand in the black and white category; such a work can be reproduced in black and white in the catalogue of a salon under the FIAP Patronage.

On the other hand, a black and white work modified by a partial toning or by the addition of one color becomes a color work (polychrome) to stand in the color category; such a work requires color reproduction in the catalogue of a salon under FIAP patronage.

2. Section “High angle / Low angle” PID-MONO:

This section is a Monochrome section. Thus, submitted images must respect the definitions of the paragraphs “DEFINITION OF MONOCHROME IMAGE (PSA)” and “DEFINITION OF MONOCHROME IMAGE (FIAP) here above.

We invite you to play with the angle of your shots, to show your best images from above or below. Whether looking up or looking down, all subjects are possible. Landscapes, architecture, portraits, … have fun with perspectives by following in the footsteps of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Alexandre Rodtchenko or Berenice Abbott and many others.

3. Section “Open Color” PID-COLOR:

All techniques are allowed. Creativity is allowed in this category.
An important remark is that MONOCHROME IMAGES are not allowed in that section.

4. Section “Tree / Trees” PID-COLOR:

For this series, the main subject of your photos must be a tree or trees. Photographs may be taken in nature, in parks or gardens or in an urban environment. The trees may be numerous or solitary, taken with a wide angle lens or in close-up, but in all cases the tree or trees must dominate the scene.

An important remark is that MONOCHROME IMAGES are not allowed in that section.

5. Section “On the road” PID-COLOR

The road to holidays, to discovery, to adventure. The road that takes you somewhere else, somewhere far away, mysterious. Or the road you take every day, in your own neighbourhood, familiar. Make the road the story, an invitation to follow you, whether or not you walk in the footsteps of Jack Kerouac, famous author of « On the Road ». It’s up to you to describe your road.

Breaches of Rules

FIAP: The mention that by the sole act of submitting his/her images or files to a salon under FIAP Patronage, the entrant accepts without exception and with no objection the following terms: – that the submitted images can be investigated by FIAP to establish if these obey to FIAP regulations and definitions even if the entrant is not a member of FIAP, – that FIAP will use any means at its disposal for this undertaking, – that any refusal to cooperate with FIAP or any refusal to submit the original files as captured by the camera, or failure to provide sufficient evidence, will be sanctioned by FIAP, – that in case of sanctions following the non compliance with FIAP regulations, the name of the entrant will be released in any form useful to inform the breaches of the rules. It is recommended to leave the EXIF data in the submitted files intact in order to ease eventual investigations. If, at any time, it is determined in the reasonable discretion of the exhibition organizer or the judges before, during, or after the judging of an exhibition that an entrant has submitted entries where one or more images may fail to comply with these Conditions of Entry, including the stated definitions, the exhibition organizers reserve the right to delete the entry from the exhibition and void any or all acceptances or awards in connection with the exhibition. Fees may be forfeited or refunded in these circumstances.
The entrant acknowledges that the decision of the exhibition organizers or the judges is final.

PSA: If, at any time, it is determined in the reasonable discretion of the exhibition organizer or the judges before, during, or after the judging of an exhibition that an entrant has submitted entries where one or more images may fail to comply with these Conditions of Entry, including the stated definitions, the exhibition organizers reserve the right to delete the entry from the exhibition and void any or all acceptances or awards in connection with the exhibition. Fees may be forfeited or refunded in these circumstances. The entrant acknowledges that the decision of the exhibition organizers or the judges is final

In order to ensure that images comply with the Conditions of Entry and definitions, the exhibition organizers may carry out reasonable measures to verify that:

a) the images are the original work of the entrant and

b) the images comply with the rules and definitions as set out in these Conditions of Entry

These steps include, but are not limited to, questioning any entrant, requiring the submission of RAW files or other digital files representing the original capture of the submitted image(s), confronting the entrant with evidence that one or more submitted images fails to comply with the Conditions of Entry (also known as Entry Rules), and offering the entrant a reasonable opportunity to provide counter evidence to refute the exhibition organizer’s evidence by a set deadline. Such entries that are not cleared or are still questionable after the entrant has presented evidence may be considered in breach of these Conditions of Entry, and declined. Such entries may be referred to PSA for further investigation of possible ethics violations.

PSA retains the right to investigate in any way all complaints/suspicions of breaches of entry conditions, impose sanctions if deemed necessary, void the acceptances of any image found to violate the PSA rules, include the entrant’s name on the list of sanctions provided to Exhibitions, and share such investigations with FIAP. Entrants automatically agree to these terms by the act of entering the Exhibition and agree to cooperate with any investigation.

If another party is submitting images on the entrant’s behalf, the entrant will still be held responsible for adhering to these Conditions of Entry (Entry Rules) and will be subject to sanction for any violations to these Conditions of Entry and PSA’s Statement of Ethics that may result. If another party is processing images for an entrant or submitting images on the entrant’s behalf, the entrant will still be held responsible for adhering to all Conditions of Entry including the specific conditions in the relevant definitions.

FIAP NOTICE: In order to have legal authority on those who do not respect the rules of FIAP, the organiser must make sure that all participants of an online event under FIAP Patronage tick a box next to which the following text is stated:

“I hereby expressly agree to FIAP document 018/2017 « Conditions and regulations for FIAP Patronage » and FIAP document 017/2017 « Sanctions for breaching FIAP regulations and the red list ». I am particularly aware of chapter II « Regulations for International photographic events under FIAP patronage » of FIAP document 018/2017, dealing under Section II.2 and II.3 with the FIAP participation rules, the sanctions for breaching FIAP regulations and the red list.

FIAP documents 018/2017 and 017/2017 must be linked to this paragraph so that participants can consult it.

PSA NOTICE: When an entrant fills in the Entry Form to submit an entry the entrant will see a feature to affirm he or she has read these Conditions of Entry when he or she fills out the entry form.
